Vocabulary Learning Revisited: From Vocab-Backup Strategy to ADLISM

Vocabulary learning has been at the heart of my teaching and research for many years. What began as a practical question—how can learners take greater control of learning new words?—eventually developed into the Vocab-Backup Strategy (VBS), a five-step approach to vocabulary learning.

Over the years, VBS has moved from classroom practice to research, conference presentations, doctoral research, and publication. In 2026, this journey continues with the second edition of Vocabulary: 5 Steps to Help Your Students Learn More Vocabulary.

ADLISM is also evolving. I will use this space to share ideas and resources related to vocabulary learning, applied linguistics, language and culture, research, and practical approaches to language teaching and learning.

More to come.
